Does IUI need to be washed again?

Postby Mustang66 » Tue Apr 24, 2012 5:21 pm

We have been deciding between 2 different MD offices for our insemination. One office says we do not need to re-wash the IUI preparation before insemination since it is preferred to be washed at the time it is fresh. The other MD office says they do a wash on IUI (or ICI, which we expected) before insemination. Is this extra re-washing necessary? The MD office that recommends it says there is a cryoprotectant even in the IUI that must be washed before insemination. It's an added expense, just wondering if CLI recommends it. Thanks!

Each physician's office has different preferences as to the type of vials they recommend.

Our IUI (pre-washed) specimens have been washed to remove the seminal plasma and are ready for an intrauterine insemination (IUI). These vials do have a cryoprotectant but it does not have to be re-washed. That is a personal preference of the medical office. Just make sure they follow CLI protocols for thawing vials and verifying quality standards prior to re-washing.

Our ICI (unwashed) specimens can be used for an intracervical insemination (ICI) or can be prepared at your physician's office for an intrauterine insemination (IUI). These vials are a little less expensive so if your physician's office requires that they prep the vial at their facility for an extra fee, this may save you a little money.

Mustang if u are purchasing an iui vial I recommend u not have it rewashed do to the fact that it can cause your vial to be under the guarenteed sperm count. Frozen sperm already has a less chance of wworking then fresh we all need the best chances we can possibly have I think certain doctors offices only do rewash for the extra cash id tell them not to or switch offices. Good luck!
